Thomas Mims, Founder and Managing Director of Emerging Africa Ltd has worked for over 30 years in a number of African countries. He began his career in the financial world as a stockbroker with Walston & Company - Members of the New York Stock Exchange - and other stock exchanges. Mr. Mims has served as a financial consultant and advisor in Nigeria, Guinea, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Ghana, Kenya, Burkina Faso, Liberia and Cote d'Ivoire. He capitalized on his work experience in Africa by founding Emerging Africa Ltd which, since 1997, has published news and data from African stock markets at EAR<GO> on Bloomberg. Mr. Mims is one of the authors of the first comprehensive access index for African stock markets which was published in Forbes Magazine. He presented a background paper to the Commission on Capital Flows to Africa which was incorporated in the publication “A Ten Year Strategy for Increasing Capital Flows to Africa.” Mr. Mims was an active participant in the African Business Advisory at the Special High-level Meeting of the Economic and Social (ECOSOC) which included the Bretton Woods institutions, the World Trade Organization and the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development. He is currently assisting numerous African companies in building corporate infrastructure, strategic planning and identifying public or private funding resources. Mr. Mims holds a Bachelor of Science from the University of Northern Colorado. After serving in the US Navy, he enrolled at the University Of Chicago Booth School Of Business.
Harry Walker, Senior Associate, has over thirty years of business experience in the areas of corporate strategy, corporate finance, managing new ventures, economic development and urban redevelopment. He spent the first ten years of his corporate career developing corporate and business strategies for Gulf Oil Corporation, The Continental Group and Avis Rent A Car, respectively. At Gulf Oil he also worked on mergers & acquisitions. He left Avis Rent A Car as Director of Corporate Strategy to become President of the newly acquired Telemarketing Corporation of America where he took a start-up to become one of the top five telemarketing companies in America. Mr. Walker became active as an angel investor in new business development in Scottsdale, AZ, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia and New York City. In 1990 he became President of Now’s The Time Records, a jazz label in Manhattan which was later sold to Brownstone Records. From 1992 through 1996 he served as President of Get Ready, Inc., an educational publishing company in Philadelphia. After teaching stints in the business schools of Temple University and Saint Joseph’s University, Mr. Walker entered the field of urban economic development as Director of Economic Development for Wilmington, Delaware. Mr. Walker has raised millions of dollars for six start-up or early stage companies in his career. He holds a MBA from the Harvard Business School.
Allen Smith, Senior Associate, has over thirty years of broad finance experience. Mr. Smith began his finance career as a corporate banker at Chemical Bank in New York specializing in project and corporate finance. To broaden his finance background, he moved into investment banking, eventually serving in key management roles for Citibank in New York and working on special assignment in Citibank’s Frankfurt office for one year. While at Citibank, Mr. Smith was assigned to work as a consultant at Bank Indonesia in Jakarta, the central bank, to advise on a restructuring of the Reserve Management Department. He next served as senior investment banking manager at UBS in Tokyo. Since his investment banking career, Mr. Smith has been CEO of a credit union and served as Chief Operating Officer and Chief Risk Officer in the hedge fund sector. More recently, he has been involved in merchant banking activities, raising debt and equity capital for small and mid-cap companies involved in clean technologies and energy efficiency, operating in Southern Africa, India, Brazil and Mexico. Prior to his finance career, he was a Project Engineer for Amoco Oil Company. Mr. Smith holds a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from the University of Illinois-Urbana Champaign and a MBA degree from the University Of Chicago Booth School Of Business.
Arik Mims, Co-founder and Managing Editor, has been responsible for compiling, composing and editing the research and content featured on Emerging Africa Research (EAR <GO>) on Bloomberg since its launch in 1997. From the inception of EAR, Mr. Mims was instrumental in the conceptualization, design and installation of the site. In order to maintain the quality, depth and consistency of EAR’s content, Mr. Mims has cultivated relationships with various financial entities and news organizations in Africa and around the world. He has provided research utilized by the African Stock Exchange Association (ASEA). Mr. Mims holds a BA in International Relations from Syracuse University.
